Hi Sha, I just saw this appear in our moderator list, since your email included images which were too big to post to jalview-discuss.

Just to summarise:

You're on windows 10. You had an issue with java, and after uninstalling/re-installing, Jalview didn't work. Uninstall/re-install lead to a stacktrace in the flexera installer. It would be good to see that stack trace, in full (you should be able to copy/paste it out of the exception dialog box into notepad/etc).

Firstly - which version of Java did you (re) install ?

The remaining errors ('Error opening registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment', 'Error: could not find java.dll', and 'Error: could not find Java SE Runtime Environment') all look like they are due to Jalview's installer thinking there is a version of Java on the machine already, and trying to use that. You mentioned that you have java enabled in your browser - does that mean you can go to java.com and it reports that you do have java available ? If so then you didn't really ininstall Java properly. Either way it looks like something is up with your machine's registry re Java installation keys.

I've forward this to Ben Soares - our specialist on installing/running Jalview on windows. Hopefully he'll be able to help you out - perhaps by working out how to force the InstallAnywhere Jalview installer to use its build in version of Java..

Over to you, Ben..

Jim.

Then I decided to uninstall my Java and just reinstall Jalview that includes Java in the one step process, but the following are the errors I got with that. I have Java enabled in my browser.

After trying to install Jalview and Java and reinstall several times
Friday, I finally gave up. When I got in this morning, I checked my Java
installation (8+), it looked fine, and I tried again to install Jalview. It
worked fine this time. I can't explain it other than my computer needed to
rest over the weekend. ??

Anyway all is working now.
Thanks,
Sha

Sounds like a reboot (or something) has fixed up the dangling registry
entries.

I'd stick with that explanation - it might be our most "popular" FAQ
solution if we did put  it on the website !

Glad things worked out in the end. We're working on a new
distribution/packaging model for Jalview - including a single bundled
executable that doesn't require an installer at all. Stay tuned !

Jim.
